I Suspect My Child Has Dyslexia– Now What?

Navigating the complexities of a child's education can be a daunting experience, particularly when suspicions arise regarding a learning difference such as dyslexia. This condition, which often manifests through reading, writing, and spelling difficulties, can leave parents feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about the best path forward. Recognizing the signs of dyslexia early is crucial, as it opens the door to effective interventions and support strategies. What is Child Find?

Child Find is a federal mandate that requires schools to identify, locate, and evaluate children with disabilities who may need special education services. This ensures that every child receives the support they deserve to succeed in school. 

What is MTSS?

 MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports. It is a framework used in schools to ensure that every student gets the help they need to succeed academically and behaviorally.

How do teams determine Special Education Eligibility?

The Three Prongs of Eligibility for Special Education 

  1. Identified Disability through Neuropsychological evaluation and/or through the SLD model 

  2. Adverse Impact on Educational Performance 

  3. Need for Special Education Services: The third prong assesses whether the child requires special education services to benefit from their education.


Action Steps

Step One: Has your child been identified by the MTSS team for a Reading Intervention Plan?

If yes, ensure the plan is based on structured literacy/science of reading and is delivered by personnel with a background in multi-sensory evidence-based reading. Structured literacy includes decoding/encoding, accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. Submit screening data to the team and reconvene the MTSS. 

If not, refer to the MTSS team and request a meeting to review all universal screeners, curriculum-based measures, and screening data. 

Step Two: Refer to the Special Education Team

If the child has not made meaningful progress through MTSS, submit a referral to the special education team and submit your concerns in writing and the screening data.
